Temps in the mid 90's
Water temps High 80's to 90
Water was clear-murky
My soon to be 2 brother-in-laws decided to hire a guide on Kentucky. We always saw these boats coming in with huge amounts of white bass...but us being bass fisherman never new how to catch them. So we decided to hire The Big Kahuna (Don Schnuck). Well the night before our big day we got a call from Don saying his mother-in-law had gotten sick so we were going to go out with his buddy Chris.
We met Chris at the dock at 6am. We told Chris of the huge goal we had to achieve that day...catching enough fish to have a fish fry for 23 people!!! He seemed kind of nervous of the news we had just told him.
After a short trip through the Barkley canal ito Lake Barkley we stopped on a deep river point. They were pulling water through the Barkley Dam so it was pushing bait fish up against this ledge. We were using light spinning tackle with in-line spinners. The trick was to throw it out, let it sink all the way to the bottom, then reel like hell for about 6 turns of the reel, then let it fall back to the bottom, and 9 times out of 10 they would hit it on the fall.
Well our 1st cast resulted in a triple hook up on white bass! The action started fast. We caught 10 in the first 5 minutes or so. The action would be slow, then it would heat up for a minute....then slow down again. We saw a bunch of "jumps"...white bass pushing bait fish to the top. Only one jump was close enough for us to get to, and we had our 1st and only quadruple hook up (the guide was fishing with us)!
We ended up catching our limit of 60 white bass. We caught anywhere from 30-40 largemouth bass (we threw most of them back and kept 1 keeper per person), about a dozen yellow bass, 1 channel cat, and 1 drum. all fish came from the same location...we never moved!
The fish fry was a success and everyone loved the fish! We used 4 different kinds of batter. Andy's Original, Andy's Cajun, Bass Pro Shops Cajun, and Kentucky D-Lite. The clear winner of the favorite batter was the BPS Cajun. It had just a little kick to it and an amazing flavor.
We have decided to make this a yearly tradition. I would highly recommend The Big Kahuna guide service if anyone wants to catch fish on KY Lake. You can reach Don from his website...www.bigkahunafishingguideservice.com. Don and Chris are both amazing guys!
They even clean the fish for you (even though we pitched in and offered to help) After the tip it ended up costing us $100 bucks a person (Totally worth it). That was for a half day (6-10), tackle was included, and he provided us with drinks. We had our limit of whites by 8:30am so we did a little catch and release and then Chris took us around and showed us a few of his favorite bass fishing spots.
