Leakproof Pop Rivet

while refreshing my familization of pop rivets on the old interweb,
I ran across this item that I had totally forgotten about.
it is an insert that goes over the stem of the open-end
pop rivet to convert it to the closed-end, watertight rivet.
I have some around here somewhere and will share them
when I find them. The insert size must match the rivet stem size.
If you use the 3/16"x 1/2" pop rivet, there is an insert to match it.
the hole in the material must be drilled a bit larger. The grip range
remains the same as the rivet. This item comes in handy when you
have an abundance of open-end rivets that can easily be converted
to closed-end rivets instead of purchasing a new supply of closed-ends.

The Closed End Inserts have the advantage that they offer
a 100 percent watertight connection. Not to be confused with the Riv-Nut,
as it is not threaded. It is a thin aluminum sleeve that slips over the rivet stem.
This is not a real common item so it may take some investigation to find a supplier.

Very interesting.
I assume it could be used with a closed end rivet too. Whether that would add any benefit I don't know.

I checked on McMaster-Carr to see if they had them (they didn't) but found there is another type of rivet I wasn't familiar with that solves the same problem. "Sealing Blind Rivets". "Also known as closed-end sealing rivets, they prevent water and air from passing through or around them. Use them to join materials together when you don't have access to both sides. The low-profile head creates a neat appearance." They have them in 18-8 Stainless and Aluminum, domed or flush head. They even have "Domed Head Sealing Blind Rivets with Plastic Seal". "Not only do these rivets prevent water and air from passing through or around them, they also have sealant bonded underneath the head to reduce leaks."

I've got a few holes I need to fill where I can't access the back side, so I'm going to give them a try.

Dayum, even available in SS and Monel ... bet those ain't cheap!
