First time posting to this new and fantastic site!

I just purchased a 2004 G3 1860 and I want to buy a nice fish finder for it. My question is, I have a basic cheap Hummingbird fish finder right now and would like to get something really nice like the Lowrance HDS-5.
Should I use the Lowrance in the back of the boat while i'm moving with my main motor or use it on my trolling motor?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

yeah im torn too. just cant decide on if mine should go up front also, but i spend more time up front fishing then in the drivers seat so i would put it on the trolling motor. and a SI in the dash

I guess it depends on if I spend a lot of time driving around lakes quickly or just trolling mostly. I wish I could interchange the high performance fish finder from the back to the trolling motor easily (and cheaply).

I have 2 finders on my rig, also. I put the one that gives the most info at the console. That way I can find structure and cover easier while on the big motor.Just use the front to stay on structure and cover while on the TM. My suggestion.

I would go the opposite. i want to see as much info about the area I am fishing. I use the cheaper of my 2 units at the console I can see the drop offs and humps with it then jump on the trolling motor and pick the hump apart. I would much rather have the SI on the front deck

That's what I like about this forum.Diversity.Each of us has our own way of doing things. We present all the different options, then we can make informed choices. Thanks redbug for giving the opposite view to the question.

one other thing to remember about the side scan.. to optain the best picture you need to be going around 2.5 mph at higher speeds you will lose a lot of info on the side scan.

If you get a SI unit, definitely put it back at the console. Those are set to give th best readings between 2.5 and 10 mph speeds I believe.
