The motor works great, but the steering gets stuck in the middle often.

When that happens, it will only go one way or another, but stick hard in the middle. I'm guessing there are damaged gears somewhere that need to be replaced?
 
It is a foot-controlled cable-steer motor. Minn Kota "All Terrain" is what it says.

I looked at the schematic, and it looks a bit complicated inside. Are they as bad as it looks to work on?

They can be. I have never worked on a cable steer unit but I have been through my 36v Ulterra a number of times. Be methodical and keep track of your screws and such and you'll do fine.

Not an issue anymore, I sold the boat. They guy says he plans on replacing it with a Terrova.
