MN Tinboaters: Titling question

I have been told that in the 70s and 60s boats were not titled unless they had a loan.

Is this true?

I'm legal as far I know.
'77 crestliner. No loan, no title, but registered.

I own a 1983 14' alumacraft with a MN title, when I went to transfer I handed the lady the registration card and the title she was pretty surprised it had a title. Most tins don't have/need a title here, just the registration card. From my experience I have had more "Registration Headaches" with trailers than the boats in MN. You can call the DMV and see if your boat is titled for sure, and if you catch them on a good day they might give you info to track it down.
