I have a very new Motor Guide 54lb. thrust trolling motor that came on my boat. It is the foot control with the cable (not wireless). The pedal has a dial for speeds 1-5. Recently speed 4 does not work at all, and occasionally no speeds except 5 will work. Is the potentiometer the culprit? Will this be difficult to replace on my own? I am good at mechanical stuff but I know little on electronics.

Yes that does sound like it could be the problem, but you would need to test it to be sure. I have a motor guide that works on high but not on the variable speed. After testing I have determined that it is in the motor itself. I have figured out what the part is (can't remember the name of it now)
As far as taking it apart, it is pretty easy and straight forward. You should not have any troubles.
Might try here for the parts.

 Check all electrical connections at the pot. Also check the connections in the head of the motor. They tend to come loose at the crimp connectors.

Well I replaced the pot and that did not fix my problem. How should I go from here in finding and fixing the problem?
