I picked this 67lb 24v thrust motorguide bow mount for 120.00. I have a general idea how to mount it but I am kind of intimidated to do it.

Should I use a 4x4, but it seems I may need to combine a 2x4 to it to get the proper height???

Take a look and let me know what you would do....

Would even pay a local tin boater a 12 pack to help me...... :D

What I would do is raise the bow area up with a new piece of ply, cover it with carpet and mount the trolling motor to that. Something like this.

The yellow area is what I'm talking about. Also the red area would be the trolling motor. The current angle you have wouldn't work so well with your style bow. Angle it a little more off the side.

IMHO.

Thats not a bad idea. Then bolt it, (plywood) directly to the gunnels with some ss bolts. Attach the motor directly to that and if I want to go without the big troller I can just undo the bolts and remove that whole woood piece. Just slap the other mini platform in and use my transom mount troller. Makes sense I guess. I just wanted to stay away from carpeting, cutting, and drilling again, but that seems like a good idea.

What size plywood up there and could I get away with not supporting it underneath if I use enough bolts in the gunnels?

Anybody else?

Here is what I did, and you have a similar area to do it. I sandwiched two pieces of 1/2" plywood for the platform. The vertical brace is a scrap piece of like 2x8 or something of the sort wrapped in carpet. I did it in a hurry to get out and fish for a day last year, and have left it because it has worked perfectly.

Gonna move my old seat cover up top to mount the trolling motor. Whats the best angle to mount it at and does it matter if the trolling motor head is at an angle in the water? (up and down angle)

You want the motor to be as close to the centerline as possible when in the water, and when stored, you don't want the top of the motor hanging off the side like that. Having it over the edge a little bit is okay, but I wouldn't leave that much hanging off.

So basically run in parallel with the side "gunnel"? Right?

Thanks. :)

I've seen a lot of boats in our clubs mounted just like you have yours now - and the head does hang off the side of the boat. Personally I would move the head more inline or parallel to the gunwhales .. it's a beast to try and deploy that sucker in the water when you have to pull the string away from you while out on the water.

As far as vertical angles, it's best if you can move it more perpendicular to the water, but if it had to have any angle at all, with that size motor I would want it to point away from the boat as opposed to going under the boat. When you're sitting up front like that, it's going to be more perpendicular to the water anyways, so it should work fine.
