First coat of paint on. Using Total Boat Flat dark earth paint for aluminum. Glad I got the dark vice the Light earth paint. Figure it is going to take about three coats. Letting it set up prior to second coat. View attachment 117544View attachment 117545 About the same color as the mud around the lake so should make clean ups simple. Really have to spread thin due to the possibility of runs. Tired and worn out but can not stop now. To stop now and continue later would require sanding the last coat which is not something I want to do.

Sonny,about how long are you waiting between coast or does it take just knowing how to go by what it looks like?
I’ve been in my sick chair most of this week is why I’ve got so many replies here in a row. I’m trying to catch up.
Next I’m headed over to my thread about my lower unit.
Your awesome sir. I hope mine turns out at least half as good as yours.
When you’re completely finished let us know how many gallons it took total so it’ll give me some ideas.

Let me ask you Sonny. Acetone to clean then alcohol to remove any film from the acetone. Am I correct? Because I’ve been using either one or the other on what little painting I’ve done.

Yes you are correct. Acetone is a better cleaner than alcohol but it evaporates quickly. When cleaning a large area at times the acetone will leave a film. The denatured alcohol dries slower allowing you to do a final cleaning. Back when I was welding we would always wipe with acetone then finish with alcohol. NAVSEA allows a minimum amount porosity and this method would pass X-ray test and dye pen. Works great for paint.

Good idea of wetting the floor I’ll remember that when I clean up my shop and get ready to paint mine. The way it is now if I paint something small I’ll wear a head lamp for extra light and last time could see dust particles floating in the air.

I use a dry vac followed with a bucket and mop. Then I take a leaf blower and blow everything down shelves, tool boxes, etc. Dry vac and mop again.

Total Boat makes great top notch stuff. I used their epoxy for redoing some patch work I found on mine. Also my UNTREATED 15/32 plywood flooring is treated with Total Boat penetrating epoxy every edge and hole I drilled. I capitalized untreated because I found 3/4” treated in it and had a lot of corrosion abatement to do. Bad chemical reaction. 15/32” (since you can’t by full 1/2” thick anymore) plywood on top of 2” foam board and the floor is as solid and light weight as they come.

Sonny you’re talking about the gentleman that proved everyone wrong about there being catfish in a certain lake aren’t you?

That’s the reason I’m not giving up on the local bass lake here. Since you told me that I’m going to eventually find them and prove them wrong. Next thing I’m trying is letting it get colder here in Texas and since it’s a power plant lake I’ll be hanging around the warm water discharge in my insulated clothes.

I caught a 9 pound bass at Lake Eufaula in January a few years back. It was a blistery 28 degrees. Am 65 years old but some of the old timers who fish Eufaula claim bigger and better fishing in the middle of winter.

I use the finger test. Press paint with a finger if it leaves a print and none on your finger your ready for another coat. I used just under a gallon of blue outside and just under a gallon of dark earth paint on the inside. That allows for 3 coats of paint. Two coats cover but I feel more comfort with three. Primer was two gallons inside and out. Primer needed to be cut with the 200 series to spread easier. Hope your feeling better.

Man I can’t do that! Do you have any idea how much house work I’d have to do when my wife’s saw my shop that clean. I already get a rough ride for vacuuming the boat every time before covering it. I keep telling her when I get enough catfish slim on the floor then it’ll be cured.

Thanks for the well wishes too. I’m all good now. Thirty years ago out of the blue one day I got so dizzy in my office I had to hug the walls all the way to the restroom. Then a horrible buzzing and ringing in my ears. It took a month before a specialist (ENT) diagnosed me with Ménière’s disease.
Ever since I’ve lived with a ringing in my head every day. And now and then a full blown attack that gives me the dizziness again and ringing gets louder. After a few days it goes away again and the ringing lowers its tone again. There’s no cure but it doesn’t hit me nearly as often as it used to. I’m almost completely deaf in my right ear and about three years ago it started ringing in my left ear.
Yet another good reason to wear my life jacket 100% while I’m on the water.
If I trip over something depending on my condition I might be guaranteed to fall. I’ve busted more ribs than anything. Except for the time I fell back , landed flat on my butt and broke my back. That was a drag. I had to wear a brace that felt like a turtle shell.

This is why if I have a bad fishing trip , boat breaks , truck , what ever. Nothings going to keep me from the water.
Next week I’m installing a complete upgraded brake kit on my truck. Then pressure testing the lower unit to find the seal to replace. Then my a$$ is going catfishing. Hopefully I’ll have my planer boards built in between so they’ll be ready.

Thank you for the compliment on painting guide. I would not call it rambling. There is more to refurbishing a boat then just batching holes and painting. Getting around obstacles be it aches and pains, hail storms, and disabled equipment is just as much a part of a long refurbishing job. The important thing is we stay on it until the day comes when we catch our first fish from the boat. That day my friend is around the corner for both of us.

I have a few old motorcycle cold weather suits with the right bottom leg of suit burnt from my bike exhaust. Some duct tape wrapped around the burnt area and I will be good to go. Have a pair of insulated rubber gloves that will work for my hands. Been looking at small portable propane heaters.

Way way back when all the telephone lines where being removed from poles and buried underground. It was one of my first full time jobs. I started off as a helper in charge of running a sharp shooter shovel. After some training I was an operator running a cable plow and had my own helper. We’d have to splice cables frequently and after the water proof connectors we had tubes of 2 part epoxy with a divider in the middle. We’d squeeze the tube to break the divider then shake it and race to cut the end of the tube off and shove that cable in it.

We used to take those tubes in the winter and squeeze the divider and shake them up and put them in our pockets. Keep our hands warm for about an hour. Wish I could get my hands on some of those tubes today.

Rained yesterday and looks like it will rain all of today. Plus a freeze warning starting tomorrow. Not a good time to finish paint job. Think I will wait until later part of week when weather will be more cooperative. Would like to get the boat out of shed to finish trim work and touch up paint. I would have more room and be able to position boat better for the remaining work. Hopefully the weather report is correct for Wednesday on through the Weekend. While waiting on weather to improve I need to clean up the router table and table saw. Radial arm saw is clean already.
