You can upgrade your motor for a hundred bucks. Keep an eye on the for sale ads. It's wintertime. You will surely grow to hate that little motor. It'll get you around, but barely. God help you if you have to battle a stiff wind to get back to the ramp. Think what you want is at least 9.9, but it may not plane. A 15 HP will make for a fun boat.

I would agree except for ....he is a new boater on a shallow and rocky lake...going slow until he learns the basics is a smarter move in my opinion. He just wants to fish...by the time he builds confedence and skills he may want a whole different boat...
