Only powered with 15 hp Mariner now and it has the rip cord starting but I have been thinking about a 25 or 30 for replacement motor with electric starting system, the only concern is weight as this boat is used in the Grand River for steelhead fishing and traveling in shallow as well as some deep.4 cycle would be great but they weigh more so 2cycle is only option.Getting 22 to 23 mph on GPS with my boat and if 30hp replacement was found alot more speed is certian.Boat rated right at 30hp so I safe there.Ideas and opinions from all that run boats simalure to mine please.

:WELCOME: Aboard fellow Michigander!!! Is your current motor a short shaft? If so, and if you get a bigger motor, let me know I might be interested in your 15hp.

Buy the most power you can afford and that will fit on the boat safely. I don't think the difference below the anti-cav plate between a 15 and 20 HP will be very big, so either one would work about the same I think. The 30 however might have considerably more depth below the anti-cav plate that could cost ya some draft.

Well, I'm certainly no expert as I don't have a lot of experience with a bunch of different motors, but I can tell you what I think of my own. I'm running a 1973 model 25hp Evinrude on my 14 foot Starcraft Seafarer and I absolutely love the performance of this motor. I've had a little trouble with it recently, but I'll definitely put money into parts before I would ever part with the motor. I don't know how fast I go, but I do know that this little 2 stroke will get up and move me across the water in a hurry. It only weighs 87 pounds, so probably a big weight savings over a 4stroke. I have considered a brand new motor, but then I think about how perfectly my old Evinrude seems matched to my boat and I can't imagine giving it up for something heavier and way more expensive. I'm sure there are some really nice advantages to having a 4 stroke, but my advice would be to find a great running old 2 stroke. I look at them all the time on ebay and craigslist...they are usually going for top dollar, but every now and then you'll find a great deal. I lucked out and got mine for $200 from a guy whose wife was making him sell his fishing boat so he could buy a ski boat for the grandkids. I actually found one on craigslist today for $250 and I'm probably going to buy it if I can get it worked out. Just my opinion based on my experiences with mine, but I think you'd be perfectly happy with a 25hp 2 stroke.

If it's rated for 30 thats what I would be looking for but I wouldn't pass up a nice 25 to 35hp motor.

I have a 25hp suzuki 89 model on a 1448 mv polar kraft and with 2 adults and one child (370 lbs total) plus boat is decked with the gear and my boat will jump up on plane quick. Its a great motor!!!!
