Have a old Johnson 35 from prob early 60's. Been sitting since mid 60's may be from 50's.

Worth the effort to re-store? I remember it ran good and inside of cowling was spotless.

Where would one start?

First off.....welcome!

Yes, your engine is well worth putting back into service but in most cases wont be cheap to do so.
It will be rugged and reliable and if used properly you should be able to hand it down to your grandkids.
Quickly.....you will need to go through the ignition, carburetor, water pump assembly, and probably re seal the gearcase.
Show us a photo of the engine and we or I can probably tell you the vintage of the engine.

X2!!!

I wish I'd known about Leroy's Ramblings back in the early 60's.

I bought two Johnson 35's off the Beach out on the west coast of Alaska. It cost me more to ship them then it cost to fix them.
Rugged shape I'll tell you. Used to death and left for the Sea Life to claim.
But I made one out of two. That's a very good engine for quiet running and good idiling.
