Earlier I posted about a Hummingbird Wide 100 and if anyone ever had any experience with them. Well today, I took the boat out and ran it a little bit, but did not do any fishing.
When I put the boat in the water, I run out a little bit and then turn on the fish finder. It showed me to be in about 50ft of water a little piece from the dock. I then run across another guy in a boat and he told me that depth sounded about right for the area, but he did not have a FF in his boat. So I ran up and down the lake a little more until I round two more fellows in a boat. I asked them if the depth in the area sounded correct by going by the reading on the fish finder, and they said yeah. One of the guys turned on his depth finder, but he said it didn't want to work or something. .
Then I take the boat to the dock to load. I was coming out of about 50ft of water into the dock and it dropped to about 29 feet. As I floated into the dock I trimmed the motor up a bit as I came in and tied the boat off.
I could see the bottom of the lake at the dock, so I looked at the depth finder and it was still reading the deep water I just came out of. So I turned off the power and turned the fish finder back on. This time however it would not record a depth. I imagine I was in 6 or 7 foot of water at the time, or somewhere around there give or take a few.
I back my truck back down in the water to load the boat. When I get back out into the deeper water again, The fish finder reads as it did before. I went through a section of 28 -29 foot of water into 50. So I load the boat and never look at the fish finder again until I pull the boat out of the water to strap it down. I look at the fish finder and again, it is giving me the deep water reading. I repeat the step of powering it off and back on. After that, it did not give a reading, which was understandable because it was out of the water.
Just wondered if that was normal or not. I have the transducer level according to eyeing it out. It bottom of the transducer may be sitting a little bit below the bottom of the boat no more than 1/4". I mounted the hummingbird transducer where the factory one was located at one time.
Overall it seemed to be working correctly by showing the drops and ledges when the water changed depths quickly, and also pointing out fish here and there and giving their depth, which I know could of been debris floating under water also. If anyone can supply some information on whether or not a FF may do what I explained normally, I would appreciate it. Thanks
