I just finished wiring up my trailer lights on my '98 Ford Windstar, while I was down there we ran 8 gauge wire to a batter box that sits under my storage area on the back of the van. I was planning on using that so that I could recharge the battery for my trolling motor. After we had everything in place it occurred to me that a marine battery might not be able to take the same type of charge i.e. speed, that a car batter takes.

Can you guys offer any advice? Is it okay to charge a marine batter with a car alternator?

you might want to look at this it will do what you want
I dont thin it is a easy as hooking wires up to you trailer lights

I'm sorry, I need to be more clear on what I did.

Since we were hooking up the trailer lights, I had the van on a lift, and I took that opportunity to run 8 gauge wire, separate from the trailer lights. The 8 gauge is 16 ft long and it goes from the engine compartment to a battery box I installed.

You can do what you are talking about fine, but you aren't going to get the charge rate that you are looking for. Best thing you can do is check what your alternator puts out in amps... but it should charge it while the car is running, but it will take a while and it is possible to overcharge it.
