Hi guys im new to site and was looking for some starting tips. I'm modifying a savage 12ft punt which is an Australian built boat. Boat is quite old but in ok condition a few slight dints. Wondering if I should beat out or leave? Also if to leave bench seats in or remove everything and start from scratch. I will post some photos soon.

Hey Scatters......welcome to TinBoats. Pictures will certainly help us in giving advice. Until then, if you use the search function in the upper right hand of this page, you can find a lot of great info.

Fender66, heres a couple of pics quality is poor as they were taken off my iphone at night, cant find my camera, but maybe some dimensions will help for advice.

Rear ;
width = appx 45" or 1200mm
height = appx 15.5" or 390mm

centre;
width = appx 45" or 1200mm
height = appx 15.5" or 390mm

front ;
width = appx 35" or 900mm.

Here are some poor pics. tomorow night ill be stripping that terrible yellow paint, should i be using strippers or a wire brush, wire brush seems quite slow as paint is quite thick.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Scatters.

Removing the bench seats may effect the integrity and strength of the sides, so check that out first. It looks like the rear seat is attached to the transom by bracket/bracing? I'm not sure what that piece is?? I would be very careful removing the rear seat if that if that is the case. It may be helping support weight that hangs from the transom. You really don't want to hurt the integrity/strength of the transom unless you plan on replacing with decking or something that will take the place of the bracing. I've not see a boat build like this before, but I do know that losing an outboard in the water or while driving down the road surely would not be good. Still very hard for me to tell. I'm sure others will chime in here with some thoughts though. I'm certainly no expert.

Just a quick update got a little done over the weekend but not enough! The bracing on the transom was done by previous owner and was stainless steel, I've removed it for the time being and will probably reinforce the transom with wood and possibly add support back in. Stripping paint is a bit of a pain in the *** especially as the previous owner has just kept painting over itself. I've been using a couple of different paint strippers and the best seems to be citrastrip! I don't think I'll get the boat back to pollished aluminum but hopefully the etch primer bites in no worries. Sourced some aluminum box framing for the decking from a customer today so should get it on the cheap ( the beauties of working in a tackle store) also have a friend who has been able to give me marine carpet for free before so hopefully can do so again. Will add more pictures during the week and hopefully have a bit more done!

i dont know how many weeks have passed but finally got all 8 coats of paint off from the outside of the boat. friend of mine is a panel worker and said hed spray the boat with 2 pac for just the wholesale cost of the paint, also going to high fill it so little imperfections cant be seen. small false floor has been cut so seat base can be added and also back deck has been cut but hatches not yet, still wondering how im going to do that so any help would be appreciated! heres a few photos and also a pic of my 2007 15hp.

..... my camera and computer not working now think i got one photo uploaded ill try again tomorow.

cheers!

Put it on water on Saturday to check for leaks and see how motor pushes it along, with two people and a 30 kg battery shE hymns along quite nicely, with one person and no battery it's borderline dangerous at full throttle. Going fishing Sunday I think so any photos worth showing I'll post next week!
