Now that I have my new HB 597ci HD DI, with the new RAM mount on the way. I was wondering if you guys leave your head units on your tins or do you removed them?

If you remove them to you have some sort of bag or something to keep them in so they don't get banged about going to and from the ramp. Bought a pistol case today at Wally World but it isn't thick enough for my unit.

Anyone have any experience with the HB Dry Bag? https://store.humminbird.com/products/523334/Dry_Bag

I remove mine for sure. As for keeping it safe, my HDS came with a snap on hard cover that keeps things out of the screen/buttons, so I usually put it in my tackle bag which goes in the car with me.

Love crown bags for storing/carrying things in because they are soft and help pad their contents. I've got about 5 in use right now and several replacements waiting to be put into service.

I'm going to have to change my drinking habits those darn Busch cans are worthless when empty.

Well I won't say there will be a taste improvement but I'll guarantee the bag to be softer than those busch cans. I get mine from an old HS buddy. His wife drinks the stuff and he's always kept the bags all these years but rarely ever uses them.

I used to have some of those years ago but through the years I have no clue what happened to them. Everyone I know is on a beer budget.

I found a camera case at Wally World that looks like it will fit the bill, won't know for sure until it gets here, mail order only.

FWIW, I got a hard face cover from HBird for mine to protect the screen, and I carry it in a pistol case that I got off eBay.

I thought pistol case too but the one I got a Wally World wasn't thick enough and it wouldn't zip up. I have thought about getting the hard face come form mine too.

The pistol case I got was a hard-sided one. Cabelas has Sonar Cases but they seem kinda pricey.

The hard screen cover is great, especially for keeping my fat fingerprints off the screen when I'm mounting/un-mounting it.

I agree that the hardcover is great. If mine hadn't have come with it I would have purchased it immediately.

AFA the Cabelas bag being expensive, I can see both sides - it looks expensive, but when you price out a good plastic Plano pistol case, and the hard cover, you're right there at the cost of the Cabelas bag (for the small which would cover most 5" FF'ers.)

Mine screen is already full of finger prints, I found the Hardcover at ebay for $20 shipped and ordered one. I looked that the one at Cabelas and the $30 one should be big enough. It's not that high when you compare it to a camera bag. I lucked out and found the one I ordered on sale for $15 if it doesn't work out I will go look at the one at Cabelas. Why Humminbird doesn't include the hardcover with the unit is beyond me, heck add $20 to the cost of the unit. The good thing is the one for the 597 will also fit the 700 series if I ever wanted to up grade.

The case I ordered from Walmart turned out to be to small. The genius that measured it measured the outside not the inside so the head unit of my HB 597 wouldn't fit into it and allow me to close it up. Back to Walmart it goes.

Went to Cabela's to look at their sonar case. looked that the small one that was big enough but I wasn't really impressed with it. Not much better than throwing it in a cardboard box with a handle. No padding or anything inside at all.

Went looking for something that would work and found a small tackle bag that was big enough to hold my head unit. The side benefit it came with 2 small plastic boxes.

Also look at a nice hard shell pistol case for $35 that would have worked also. Debated but decided on the tackle bag, it was on sale for $11.99 the pistol case wasn't. So I could always go back and get the pistol case.

Upon getting the tackle bag home it appeared that it would work fine with a little foam added to fill the extra space and add some additional padding. So I went to work cutting some form and I also borrowed on of the wife's micro fiber towels as a liner (don't tell her I don't think she will miss it).

Started out by cutting a piece of foam an inch think and 5" think, happen to have some laying around. Made an U shaped piece gluing the pieces together. I then covered the pieces with the micro fiber towel.

There is a nice little pouch in the front where I will keep the manual and some screen cleaning supplies.

Looks great! Just a heads up, for what its worth, and I can only speak for my area, but conservation officers often suspect crown royal purple pouches to contain weed. Probably not a huge factor, but image portrayed to law enforcement is important.

Thats ok with me. He can look in mine all he wants. Or maybe I'll tell him "no! get a warrent" just to give him a hard time for giving me a hard time
