I'm running 27 -29MPH with a very heavy 1448 Alweld with a 25hp 4-stroke Yamaha. If it's just me in the boat, I hit the 30's.

If your worried about having to get off the water fast you would probaly want to go with the bigger motor. I've never heard anyone wish they would've gotten a smaller motor. Be safe use your head when you see the weather coming.

I agree 150% I learned when I had my 17ft Lund Pro Sport in 2007. Big water fishing isn't fun when you are full throttle on an 80hp Yamaha 4stroke doing 34-37mph. Hence the upgrade to bigger boat and the 225hp.

My advice is that if weather is a concern, as Crankworm stated, get the bigger motor. It will pay off.

Go with the biggest motor your boat and wallet can handle.
I have basically the same boat total weight same ball park.
Empty with just me and gear I'm thinking about 300 pounds, I can get the boat to move about 20 mph.
Yesterday we had 2 hunters & decoys. The boat frozen with about 1.5 inches of ice on it for the ride home.
What takes me 25 minutes in the summer took over an hour to get us back home. Wind was to our back.
Oh I'm running a 20 hp Evinrude.

Prepare for the unexpected so when it happens you'll survive
