Dale H, you did the correct thing. I don’t know the boat laws where you are, but here in Oregon the “Good Samaritan” Law is a double edged sword... if you don’t help a boater in distress and it is found that you could have rendered aid, you could be held liable for damages and/or loss of life. On the other hand if you render aid wether successful or not, the distressed boater can’t press charges against you if you were acting as a normal rational human. I don’t know what I would have done in your situation, but I don’t think my attempt would have ended much differently.
