Yes, rollers are supposed to roll. Otherwise they would call them slicks......
With these smaller boats, there isn't a right, or wrong way to do them, just the way that works best. On my 12 foot Grumman, I had 4 foot bunks, with a support under the bow as well. Didn't like that method at all. It would ride over the bunks, and hang on the crossbar and bow roller. However, on vacation, we trailered a 12 foot vee on my Yazoo trailer, which had 10 foot bunks. I mounted an adjustable roller mount on the bow crossbar (about 9 feet from transom), and it was about perfect. The boat only rested on the aft 4 or so feet of bunks, but having the 10 foot bunks made loading so much easier. Even on a steep ramp, with the trailer deep, the boat would center easily, and slide up the bunks, then it would find the roller, and the bow would lift up into loading configuration, while the stern would then settle on the bunks.
Now my Yazoo, being a flat bottom, loves the long bunks too, but doesn't center as easily, as it doesn't have any vee to it. However, the long bunks are key on a flat bottom too. If I ever redo the bunks on it, I will probably make them 12 foot, as it will assist in deep steep loadings.
