Sorry if this is a dumb question but I’m fixing up my little old sea king aluminum fishing boat. I’m replacing the transom with some fresh new wood and was wondering about a cap. So this boat has never had one that I’m aware of. Anyhow what’s the purpose of it? Is it needed? I can’t see how that thin gauge aluminum people use to make one does anything structural. It looks more like it’s an aesthetic type deal. Does it serve a needed purpose and should I consider making one? Thank you guys.

One could be installed that would be stiff enough to be structural. I don't think they usually are. Once caulked on, they keep the plywood from getting wet and rotting - by theory. I'm sure somebody makes "transom cap". I don't know where to find it. I have just bought aluminum channel before.

These guys are local to me but most areas probably have a metals supplier that carries what you need.

Check out these sites for metals.

https://www.yarde.com/cgi-bin/dropzone.pl They sell left over pieces. (Drops)

https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/store-finder/ This company will cut to your size. Prices are good.

Use 1/16" thick wall (or less) aluminum 'U' channel, works great! I have probably repaired a dozen tin skiffs this way. Aluminum trim nails (ribbed or twisted, like used to hold aluminum siding) is slick for fasteners.
