You guys have been great in answering some of my beginner questions, so I have another one for you. I will only ever be running a trolling motor on my little 12 footer, as I am surrounded by strip pits where I live and a trolling motor does just fine. My question is does the wood on the outside of my boat have to go all the way to the bottom of the boat, or can I have just a nice chunk of plywood there so my motor can grip but not so much that the plywood would set in the water when fishing. seems silly to have wood down there rotting if I really don't need to.

Thanks for the answers in advance.

The simple answer is no. There is no need to have it in the water.
