Trolling motor question

I have an older motor guide 54 thrust transom mounted trolling motor. Here's my problem with it. It will run in forward #1,2,5 and reverse 1 & 2. I put a test light up to all te connections and there getting power, so I think the problem is in the little gear box connected to the handle. Has anyone else had a problem like this and if so am I in the right area or is it something else?

I've had 2 switches go out on Minnkota's. They gave me the same type of problem.
