Hey fellas, I've been working on a buds 1995 25 Evinrude that had been sitting for a while, actually a few years. What I've done is pulled and rebuilt carb, fuel pump and replaced some fuel lines. Sea Foamed the engine and replaced the plugs after. Link n sync the carb, still popping some thru exhaust. Idle screw is out about 2.5 turns. Took it for a spin and its not getting to top end speed. Played around with it while out on the river. What I found out was ,while wide open I could take the other hand and cover about 1/2 of carb and it would take off and run like it should. Got about 7 more mph while doing this. Also if I pumped the primer like a mad man it would run better. My guess is that for some reason its running very lean. Any thoughts or advise ?

Are you sure the link and sync was done exactly how the OEM manual states? Have you set the slow speed idle screw while engine is in the water, on the boat and in gear at its lowest idle? And last but not least, are you 1,000% sure that you cleaned EVERY orifice and jet really good on the carburetor when rebuilding it, removed and replaced all welch/freeze plugs and put the new packing in the slow speed idle screw.....etc?

It sounds like while the engine is advancing it is NOT getting enough fuel which points toward link and sync or carb.

Here's a link to the service manual for your motor in pdf.

Maybe it will help

Shoot me a message with your email address and I'll email the pdf.

1) Pretty sure link n sync was done correctly ( got a manual )

2) slow speed idle was set while motor was in a 55 gal drum , warmed up & in gear ( but no T-stat yet )

3) 999.9 % sure all was cleaned, pulled welch plugs and sprayed card cleaner through all holes after sitting in a tub full of sea foam
for 2 days. Plus took a can of air ( like the ones used for computers) N blew all orifices out.

4) didn't change out the packing/washer in the slow speed set screw as I couldn't get that sucker out.

I had a spare carb known to be good, put that on while in the river yesterday morning (after posting this) and it ran very similar, not getting up to top speed. Now I'm kinda leaning toward the primer might be letting air in. Hole shots are great, then it falls off.

I have noticed on some of these engines with the manual primer setup that the primer knob after time becomes really hard to completely push in. So the motor is being run with the knob out just a hair. This will cause the engine to run really rough. Check your primer for a bad/bent C clip on the base of the knob to see if it is not allowing it to be pressed all the way in. I have had to hit them with my fist before to get them to seat properly. Of course I fixed them once off the water, but when you on the water and it does not seat the motor will act like it has carb problems.

Haven't messed with it today. I'll hit it in the morning. Put out some mineral blocks out and put in 3 food plots for the deer , hopefully it'll bring in that 12 pointer I've been watching. [-o<

spotco2 thanks for the link !

Talons, you're right . :D Johny is all over this. i'll keep yall posted

Well ,after changing out the primer pump went out on Monday for a run and ended up twisting the the idle valve off. Had to limp back to the ramp on trolling motor. This carb was my known good one. Time to order some parts. broken.jpg

Got back to the house and when all else fails, time to break out the book. Cracked it open and there was the page for ohm readings for plug wires, figured what the heck,I'll check them too.

Should be reading 0.0 ...............NOT!!

Checked one off the 15 hp , perfect ! Put the rebuilt carb on and spare plug wire . Ran it Tuesday, teaked the idle got it to push the 16 ft lowe up to 27 mph. =D> The thing is I had checked for spark with a timing light. Looked good on the idle, guess it was breaking down under load.

Oh , found out what the problem with the original carb was ............I installed the float upside down [-X
