I was working on winterizing my 1968 CD25R 6hp Johnson, and mistook the pivot pin for one of the oil plugs (which were clearly marked, once I noticed them). What is this pin for? and is it a problem that I took it out?

Can you post a pic of the area you took the pin out of? If it's where I'm thinking it is, you may have just disabled your ability to shift from forward to reverse.

That sounds serious. I just put it back! It is on the opposite side, and a bit higher (just below the level of the prop), than the oil drain. Thanks.

If it was the phillips head screw you removed, that is for the shift fork that moves the clutch dog. I hope it went back through the fork, if not you won`t be able to shift into gear. That means you`ll have to diassemble the gearcase to get it right.

It went right back in, I hope it is ok. I guess I will find out in the spring.
*Edit* I just went out and pulled the rope and the prop turns while in forward and when in reverse.

It has always been my goal, when messing with things...to wind up with no leftover parts. Sometimes, I even put them all back where they belong. ha ha

Glad you got it back in fine. regards, Rich

I am not good with motors, or anything mechanical for that matter, and a friend told me: "Now that you have a boat you will be..."

Thanks for the help guys.

Just a hint...a digital camera or a camera phone can be very helpful. If I haven't done a particular project before, I like to take pix of each step. That way, when I forget what I did..... I have a trail R

I believe that the pivot pin that you are referring to ....is..... for shallow running.

The OP used that name ...but it may not be the exact part to which you are referring. That's my guess, anyhow. R
