I bought a humminbird 570 di and I am trying to decide if I mount it at the back of the boat or on the trolling motor. Obviously if I mount it on my trolling motor it will only be in use when the trolling motor is down. If I mount it on the back I can use it at all times, but by the time I see something on the screen I will already be past it and it may be hard to see from the front of the boat. Any advice, opinions, or pics of your setups would be useful.

Thanks

My Lowrance Elite DSI is mounted on the transom.
But if I was to do it over I would put it on the TM. Because you have to be moving for it to pic up structure anyway& like you said your always looking behind you. If you mt it on the transom you may wanna pic up some marker bouys. When I see a fishy area I throw out a maker and turn around and start fishing it. That works for me.

Mine was a PITA to mount. I broke the first mount when the allen wrench mounting screw stuck. had to dremel off the mount without damaging the transducer. Spent $29 for another mount even though I did nothing wrong. just follow the instructions as to where...mine is about 15" from the motor on the right side between ribs. the 1/2 way line on the ducer is at the bottom of the boat.

I will say that I haven't been as impressed with the 597HDdi as I should. the DI hasn't shown anything the other screens don't...and the DI has never shown a fish on it....for me anyway. structure, yes.
When the crappies were feeding on the bottom, the switchfire didn't pick them up...so I was fishing for the ones suspended...that wouldn't bite....wasted a couple days on that endeavor... :LOL2: then decided on a whim to see if the crappies were feeding on the bottom....Viola! I started pulling them in....still not showing up on the screen on the bottom....so just beware....it's really good at finding spots, but it does miss things.

I would mount the HU where you will be fishing the most from based on your style of fishing, either at the bow or transom. You can use a RAM mount and then the HU can be turned/swiveled easily for viewing from anywhere in the boat, but with a 4-5" screen, will be more difficult to see the screen.

DS images will only show fish as little white dots or contrasting color dots (no fish ID symbols) depending on the color selection. Try using both the 2d and DS at the same time, you should be able to find the fish in DS when comparing to the 2d version.

If you mount your side image ducer on the trolling motor you need to keep the motor going straight to get any usable image.
I would mount it on the transom drive through the area marking the spots you intend to fish the turn around and go bacck and fish them.

This is how my 597 tranducer is mounted. It was really touchy about the location. I moved it 3 times.

Mine is mounted kinda like Gil's.
It's shown in my mod link below.
My Lowrance is my first DI unit , I am still learning every time I get on the water.
I will be adding a 2D to go along with my DSI to help me confirm what I think I am seeing as far as fish. I've been told that's what a lot of people do, and DI is more of a structure finder than a ff.
I can tell you that the imaging on my unit is awesome, it's a totally different ball game than the old 2Ds.
