Jim. That plastic pannel is painted. It is held on by double sided tape and when removed its very flexable like rubber. Idk if they fade so quick because of the flex agents in the paint or just because there is no clear coat. Buff it with a cleaner wax

Check for batt V at the motor. Hook your test light to batt V and check the ground. If both are good you need a motor. A multi meter is a lot more accurate if you have access to one. Id check for high resistance or broke wire strands between your solenoid and motor before commiting to a new one

In your case if something shorts out you can jerk the clips off the battery terminals. If your motor is hard wired to the battery you need some kind of protection ( cb )
