    Aluminum canoe owners: question

Just so you know, Square back canoes used are a rare as hens teeth. Don't pass up a good deal on a regular model waiting for the one you may never find. You can pretty easily mount a small outboard on a rear outrigger with the regular style . It's just a bit more awkward.

Where is the cheapest / best place to get a top for 1988

I know a guy who just got a 88 Sea Nymph Fish n Ski . He is wanting to get a typical Sunbtella cockpit cover but has none of the poles and hardware. The only top shop around here is pretty pricey due to being near to the Canadian Border. Is there anybody out there who can do these old...

    Aluminum canoe owners: question

I have had an old Grumman 17 since the mid 80's and it was old then. I have stored it under the bushes since I got it and it's fine. It seems like all the old Poly's I see have a large bow in center where the keel folded then popped back again. You definitely don't want to store one on...

    Painting Aluminum Boat

No reason why not, especially if it's being sprayed. If you use the stuff with hardener ( Isocyanates) in it (2 part paint) definitely paint it outside and use a decent respirator with NEW FILTERS. That's not even the recommended protection (supplied air) but it will do if you do it...

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

This is the foam once I finally got to it. Wow what a mess. To get to that block just to check it really was a horror. It took pulling all those panels just to remove the long one and when it was done I had to pry it of the foam using a flat spade shovel. Pulling that stuff is where...

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

I tore out all the rear decking right forward to the front of the drywell and all just to pull one of those silly side panels they filled with foam. The strange part was that after drilling out at least 50 rivets and half as many screws (because they are all interlaced) I tested the bottom of...

    Painting Aluminum Boat

Nice job. For anyone trying to duplicate this though you won't likely be able to get Zinc Chromate anymore . THe newer Envirofriendly version is Zinc Phospate. I never could tell if it worked as good. If you want really really tough wear resistant finish get this, EPOXY CHROMATE...

    Elbow pains?

Here in the North Country nobody does it by hand unless its for kindling or camp wood. If you are gonna burn wood get a hydraulic splitter or find a buddy who has one and you bring the beer.

What prop? 90 Mercury Pro Team 190Tx

The best way to find out, the very best is do this. Take your boat if you don't already know and wind it up an find the RPM's at wide open throttle flat out max. That's WOT the crucial number. Do it with a full or nearly full tank and all the gear you carry normally. Then go get the...

    Elbow pains?

Probably a repetitive stress injury that hurt the muscle. These suck badly and don't heal fast at all. Look around on Youtube concerning the subject. You will likely find some sports Dr.s showing the proper stretching exercises to give you the Physical Therapy you need to make it go away...

    Turned my uniforms in

Good for you. I hung up my 12 shooter Dec 31, 2012 and never looked back. I did get to keep my badge in it's block of plastic. Personally I just love being retired and wouldn't go back if you gave me the place. Far too employee unfriendly (US Customs & Border Protection). All the...

    Painting help needed!

Try to use a sprayer if you can find one. Even a Wagner does a darned good job if you keep the paint thinned enough. The HF Purple large HVLP spray gun is actually a darned nice gun if you have an air compressor big enough to drive it. You can't really get a uniform finish with a roller...

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

Wow, I didn't know that there were so many options. Whatever it is the stuff will have to be thick so it will cover and blend those edges that were designed to be under the carpet ( rear deck). Thanks. I started a thread on my teardown process a short while ago. It's gonna get...

Tearing Down My 85 Tracker Tournament V-17

I asked last year about this new to me find for $800. It runs like a top but behaved badly. Can't trim down or it likes to porpoise and act skiddishly. It has a 50 Merc with 4 blade prop? and Stingray fin?. I took off the fin and it drove even worse needing to be trimmed way up to get...

Where do you buy your aluminum sheet from?

Hit the scrap yard. Aluminum is expensive so they tend to keep it near by and not in the huge dangerous mountains of steel you see . That way it's easy to see what you want and actually get at it. The Good Ol Boy scrappers are a lot better than the "Recycler Greenie" places :---) who...

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

I just got around to taking the mid deck and steering station off. I found those short rectangular pieces they use to keep the foam from getting into the bilge bottom to be wet. Aside from that that crap is dry as a popcorn fart. I took a couple cores down low and all the way to the...

Pressure Treated Plywood - How to tell?

Looks like sanded exterior CDX Ply to me. Pressure treated is greenish all over and feels heavier.

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

Damn, You probably nailed it with the deck over deck comment. My carpet is completely worn but intact yet that deck under the front pedestal is freakishly thick by my thinking. The whole floor is rock solid though in spite of it which also points to a double floor. Those new stainless...

Wet Foam, How Do You Tell.

 Ahh good to know. I am sure the water blade business is coming from up front, the sender is on the transom. It comes from right next to the seat out and up then curves over to just like some surfer "in the pipe" I swear. I did pull the pedistal mounts to replace the bushings...
