12 volt vs 24 volt trolling motor

In a river with any kind of current, the 55lb thrust won't move you against the current. In flat water it will get you around. If you can afford the bigger motor and have room for the extra battery, get the bigger motor. Nobody ever was sorry they had too much trolling motor power. The extra...

    Sonars

It seems new models are coming out every day and the older models are always on sale. It’s very hard to keep up. Bass Pro is having sales right now with some great Garmin units in your price range. Hurry, the stock goes fast and may be already gone.

Learned something today ( I think)

That is going to cost you. Now, you're going to have to carry every lure you own to find the ONE that will catch fish when they aren't biting. Good luck with that......

Never ending search for perfect boat

I had the perfect (for me) boat in mind but no one had anything close. I don't have the tools or the skills to build what I wanted. So I had to go almost 300 miles to a custom boat shop to make it happen. They took a bare Blazer boat hull and made it my perfect tin boat.

    Boat width

What measurement are you looking for? The bottom width or the beam? If it’s 16 feet long, 48 inches across the bottom is a common size. Mine is 65 inches across the beam. An accurate guess? The picture isn’t good enough for accuracy. Doesn’t the owner own a measuring tape? That’s the only way...

    Upcoming Spring Build

If the battery was fully charged first, the maintainer should be OK.

    Upcoming Spring Build

To properly charge the battery, the charger should be approx. 10% of the rated capacity. That's 10 - 15 amps for most TM batteries. A battery must gas a little bit when charged to keep the electrolyte mixed. A slow charge like that will not make it form gas bubble and the electrolyte will...

    Upcoming Spring Build

I can't help with the wood sealing issues, but the charger you are looking at seems pretty small. What size battery are you trying to charge? A 4 amp charger will not charge a full size battery properly and shorten its life.

    24v system and 12v accessories

The wiring in your diagram will work fine, but It is never a good idea to run a sonar on the same batteries as your trolling motor. The motor may generate interference on the sonar.

    GPS Plotter vs Chartplotter

Garmin has units with GPS with 17,000 built in maps, a 4" screen (EchoMap 44cv) and down imaging for around $350. It also has the Quick Draw feature to create your own high def maps. They also offer a 5 inch screen version.

V bottom jon boat vs flat bottom

Isn't the definition of a jon a flat bottom boat? Am I wrong, but if it doesn't have a flat bottom, it's not a jon is it? I've seen V hulls called jons on the internet but when did the meaning change? (sorry about the thread hijack)

    Accessorie wires not large enough

I'm curious as to how big your boat is that it will be 50-60 foot run from the light bar to your fuse panel.

Twenty things to check before buying a used boat

Does anybody really replace their water pump impeller every year?

Transducer mounted on the wrong side of prop... change?

Because the prop sits more than a foot behind the transducer, and your current mounting position is as far to the left as it can get, there is a good chance, it will work just fine. If it were me, I’d mount your new transducer in the same holes and see how it works. Only switch to the other...

Post a pic of your Boat!

New boat the day I picked it up in November. Haven't even gotten it wet yet. Since I picked it up, I've added a 24v trolling motor, depth finders, power plug w/USB, battery disconnect switch, and seats on the front and rear decks. The boat was a bare hull and my boat guy put in the center...

    2018 Mercury Jet?

You'll find a problem with the Big Tiller. It's considerably longer than a normal tiller. If you put a seat on the rear bench, the tiller handle can hit the seat, at least it did on mine. I couldn't use the seat, I had to sit on the very edge of the seat on a cushion. I took off the Big Tiller...

I'd hate to have to pull start a 60hp motor several times a day.

    Terrova on TX 17

I have a sliding bracket on my Terrova for 2 reasons. First was security. I travel to fish quite a bit and wanted to be able to easily remove the motor and lock it up. Today, I have a second reason. I own two boats and I use the same trolling motor on both of them. It makes switching them a...

    Battery disconnect switch

I ordered a switch similar to the brass switch I posted above. If you Google SW700 switch, you will find several places to purchase with prices from $20-$30 plus shipping.

    2 stroke to a 4 stroke?

My 50/35 Tohatsu jet 2 stroke outboard weighs 192 pounds. A Mercury, 4 stroke 40/29 weighs 267 pounds. A 70 pound difference is quite a bit and a loss of an extra 6 hp made it a no brainer for me to choose the 2 stroke.
