Hi guys I'm new to the forums here and I was hoping to get some advice on a used outboard.

I threw in the towel on my 78 evinrude 9.9 (see username) and I've been looking for a suitable replacement for my '64 starcraft v-hull.

Recently I came across a 03 Mercury 9.9 (4 stroke, manual start) for $850 with only 10 hours of run time. While the price seems hard to beat, I know sitting in storage can be very detrimental to engines. I emailed the guy and he claims that the motor starts up without a hitch and that he fogged the carburetor before storing it. So what do you guys think? Is it gonna be another money pit or a practically brand new motor for half price?

thanks
Andrew

Money Pit, Maybe but a new one would be 2600 so, I think you have some room to work. But by waiting you probably lost it! If he's near olando I go write a check now if it starts and runs a little not worried about the idle.

+1. Rebuilb the carb and it is still a steal at $850.

Well looks like you guys were right, someone snatched it up.

I saw a 94 Yamaha 9.9 for 600 --gonna go check it out today.

Small Mercs are usually gone in a hurry...if you find a later model less than have the cost of new you better snatch it up in a hurry, I lost two just recently...both times I was second in line to buy and both times the person bought them. I ended up with a returned 2.5hp merc from Bass Pro with the warranty still on it, paid more than I would have liked but I needed a motor. I did save $300 over cost of new.

I woulda kept the 78 rude.....unless its been beat to hell and back(wich they usually can take)it wouldn't take much to have that thing purring like a kitten....

Still got the 78. Replaced stator, head gasket, fuel pump, impeller, rebuilt carb and now it's got lower unit issues (bent prop shaft and god knows what else). I don't know how much more I can put in to it. On the other hand I probably can't get near what I put into it if I sell it.

Good to know. Next time I won't hesitate.
