I wish my first post on this website was the beginnings of my mod for my tracker grizzly but unfortunately I made a rather unpleasant discovery today on my recently aquired motor. I haven't ran this motor yet but the previous owner swears up and down he knows nothing of this Crack (i'm upset at myself for missing it) at the time I couldn't run it as it was minus 20 degrees. I have no mechanical knowledge so I have a few questions before taking this to my marine mech.

What could have caused this? I've looked online and a new cover and gasket comes to 170 bucks Canadian. Do I replace this or is it just going to happen again?

Also you'll see the yellow chalk where this engine was just recently rebuilt and some of the studs broke so they never tapped them out and put new ones in...could this be the reason it cracked?

What else should I be checking/doing?

I'm just trying to make an educated decision before taking this thing in. any help would be greatly appreciated

Looks like a freeze crack to me.

Amature mechanics break off bolts, professional mechanics know how to get them out.
