great deal
those are great running motors
'Tis not a 40 at the prop. Didn't start rating them there until around '85. That would be a 40 at the crank, and while I've never dyno'd any motor to test it, supposedly, outboards loose about 10% between the motor and the prop. So, I would place this one with a modern 35. Maybe a hair lower, as it is a 35 year old engine, and obviously not 100% on compression and such. All being propped right, I could probably be beat by a modern 35, but I bet it would be a close race. A modern 30 probably wouldn't beat me.Zum said:Just checking to make sure it was a true 40hp at the prop.
Thanks.
I have had a 40hp on my boat before,only a 30hp now...
kinda missing the 40hp.
Yep, I found a tiller on ebay for mine. Direct bolt and go. Easy as pie. I glanced through ebay earlier today looking for a tiller for it, as I am thinking about changing the short shaft one to tiller before I sell it. Didn't get past the second page, and didn't click on them, but I think I saw one that fits it. May want to check it out, and then rethink it.Pappy said:Converting that engine to a tiller is a breeze. You would need the tiller handle from a donor engine and the shaft/gear assembly that goes from the handle back to the vertical throttle shaft gear. Just about everything from the late 50's will fit that midsection. Just did a conversion on a '57 Johnson 35. Took all of an hour, with painting to match.
