Yeah that or somehow I messed it up somehofour won't go into gear in foward.. Reverse and neautral are fine.. if it's too good to be true it probally is but I got the motor on a boat that the guy gave me for free and payed 6. Sold the boat for 3 so I still only really payed three for a good 2000 powerhead I'm just a lower unit away from water ready now.

Sounds like you just have the shift linkage out of sync. Easy enough to do. Take the lower back off and make sure everything is lined up right.

Needs a new lower unit cause foward is shot.. mechanic told me... im trying to figure out how to find out what lower units years and models will fit mine.. anyone know where i can find that?

Hey I picked up a good lower unit yesterday.. I cant decide if I should cough up 75 dollars just for a mechanic to do the adjustments putting it on or I should figure it out myself.. im ready to be on the water. Are adjustments difficult to do.

Good news guys.. the Merc is running and cranking like theres no tommorow!! Took her out on the lake yesterday and here are some pictures. The motor runs good starts right up and idles.. but does not run as fast as I thought it would. I managed to get atleast 20mph but whenever I tried to put her all the way down she topped out. So i ran some seafoam through her this morning to hopefully decarb it a little. for about 20 minutes and it put out a little smoke but not nearly as much as those youtube videos. After 20 minutes there wasnt too much smoke coming out just a little here and there so I pulled the gas line and let her run out. In 20 minutes she ran about a half gallons worth of mix. If it only runs 25mph ill still be happy. Havent taken her out since yet but is 20 minutes enough?

Sorry about the picture quality most of the pictures were covered by my buddys finger so there are only a few salvagable ones.

Those old Trackers are as heavy as lead but I would think that it would run more than 20mph wot. Looks like you had her loaded pretty good with 3 adults, a baby and a dog, though. (You probably should check your tag and the listed weight limit as to not get a ticket).

Do you have a tach and how did you record your speed? What do you mean by "tops out"?

You may either have too much prop for your setup or not enough (depending on wot rpm).

ps... check your state regs on children and lifejackets. Any child under age 12 in a moving boat in KY is required by law to have a lifejacket on. That's a pretty hefty ticket here.

Yeah it was loaded up but as the day went on, it wore in more and pushed it faster and faster though.. it has been sleeping for 6 years and was its first time in the water.. after my wife and baby left.. It was just me, a buddy, and my dog and it seemed to push harder around 25. I think the total weight limit is 700not including gear so it was weighed down but not more then allowed. Max HP rating is 55. It tops out like if I tried to open her up she would sputter off sometimes. I dont have anything to record my speed but if i was to guess my top speed yesterday was probally 25. I do plan to redo the interior and lighten the load this winter though. I think it was mostly the motor had been sitting for 6 years but I did run some seafoam through there and plan to take her out tommorow break her in some more. Thanks for all your help by the way quackr. Was 20 minutes of running seafoam too little?

Glad to hear you got it going. First thing I a going to do is scold you myself for that baby with no life jacket. I don't wear mine like I should but my kids do not set a foot in the boat without their jackets. Another reason I practice what I preach there is my 3 year old bailed out of the boat on me one day, he had his on and it made it very easy to retrieve him. If I irritate you a little I don't care if it prevents a tragedy.

Anyway off my box now. Borrow a gps and take it with you next time if you don't have one easiest way to get a good MPH reading. You also need to know the RPM to see if you have it propped even close. I'd do another seafoam treatment as well did mine 3 times. But I've got a much older motor too. Did you do a decarb treatment or just run some through?

Just thought it would be a nice memory taking my first born out with me on my first voyage in my new/old boat :) definitely won't be putting her on again til she's 1-2 though it was nerve wrecking. So don't worry I already have a size 1 1/2 year old snoopy life jacket just waiting for her to grow into for next spring. And yeah im going to see if my car GPS will work but I think it may require to be plugged into a car outlet in order to run. you ran seafoam through three times in the same day? and I just ran it through the gas

What brand GPS is it? Most will work for a while without 12 volts. Just make sure it is full charged when yo get there.

Here is the decarbing process I followed. Keep in mind my old motor is a '76 that has had a hard life before I got it. I would hope your 2000 wouldn't be that bad.... Decarbing process using seafoam.
