I really want to help reduce the temp of the boat since I'm in it barefoot relaxing most of the time. And it has never been kept in the water like I will be doing so now is the best time to paint it before it gets any river scum/algae buildup. I prefer to go with white but probably an off white. I'm used to fiberglass boats and they can really blind you on a bright day. So has anyone painted theirs white and how has it held up with the darker green underneath?

The deck of my jet boat is Hatteras Off White, and it is quite a bit cooler than a OD green johnboat interior, for sure. As long as you make sure to remove all dirt and oil residue, and give a light scuffing with a scotch brite pad, and rinse, it should be fine. The scotch brite should give the surface enough 'tooth' for your coating to stick nicely.

You really don't want to use sandpaper, as it's too abrasive, you don't need to remove the paint, just lightly hit it to give it some texture. Also, sandpaper contains aluminum oxide, and when you're painting an aluminum boat, particularly on bare metal, aluminum oxide can cause flaking of paint.

Thanks, I'm looking to paint both the inside and outside and I wasn't sure if I would end up using different paint for the bottom. I'll be keeping it in the water on the Delaware River where it's fresh water flow but we get some serious algae growth.
