i have 2 batterys, one in front and one in back. where i have them they are not easily accessible and i want to run seperate +'s and -'s up through the deck with posts so all i have to do is plug into them to charge the batterys without having to get to them. they are in spots wich have plenty of open space around them. good idea or bad? and why? thanks.....(i think it a good one, but im no electrician)

I've done it before on other things and it worked fine for me.

Just make sure the new post are not a trip hazard or somewhere that something metal (fish net handle) can drop down and arc them out.

If you can insulate them with caps that would be your best option.

they wont be a trip hazard, on the front i built a small deck for the trolling motor to be mounted on and on the face of that deck i have a few switches(bildge, lights, battery etc...) and im gonna mount them in the same place, on the back one there is a shelf with three seperate trays that are built into the transom and im gonna put them right below the front of the motor and slightly set back under it so there will be no tripping or arcing danger. both will be enclosed with a small hatch/lid to access them.

are you planning on an on board charger? if so run the leads back to the battery

no, just wanna be able to hook charger up without hassle. never got the whole on-board charger deal, why spend the money when all your really doing is plugging your battery to a charger, whats it matter if its hooked to the boat or portable??? besides having more banks??? maybe i dont see the advantages so feel free to clue me in if im wrong. i have 2 batteries if it helps explain it to me...

for me it is convenience.. i don't have to hook it up after a long day on the water
just plug it in and I'm good to go in the morning.
having to batteries it makes even more sense you wont have to get up in the middle of the night to switch the charger to the other battery

Onboard charger is something I always purchase. I just bought a two bank Guest from Cabelas with a $65 credit, final cost was like $35 bucks. The only thing I will have to do is increase one set of the leads, but that won't be too hard once it comes and I can determine the gauge of the wire.

Highly recommend, if only for convenience.

i still dont see a difference, you have to plug into the on-board charger right? all i have to do is plug onto the posts i made. i dont see how its easier and still think its a waste of money...oh and i have a charger for each battery sitting on a workbench, my boat backs right up to them and i can have them both charging in 3 seconds without getting in the boat. flip 1 switch and put 1 clip on each of the four posts....

Sounds like you're all set.
