I have a basket case project boat that I picked up for a reasonable price and hope to gain some knowledge here as I begin to make something seaworthy out of it.
It is a 1988 cajun special bass boat
15' all welded Aluminum w/driver's console and front and rear casting decks
no motor, but shows a maximum of 35 hp

I will be using this boat for running in local rivers, bayous, and canals as I love to fish for bass and Sac-a-lait.
I've noticed that the bottom hull, between the inside runners, has void/indentations and am wondering how that will affect the way the boat performs? I'm hoping to find a motor that is at the maximum allowable and with that said would like to know if there is something that can be done to increase the hp rating...50 hp or more?...would a jack plate be benificial?
I love being on the water and any suggestions, guidance, rules of thumb, and technical input is most greatfully appreciated.

Welcome!
Even if your from LA, we like to know where ye air! Fill out your infomation. (My wife's from Jena and we have relatives down near the Net Company.)

Posting photos is easy enough, and we like photos!

Take your time looking for Motors. 25 Hp & up will make that boat fly. 9.9 would work too. LIghter and easier on fuel.

Every state is different. I know in Texas after some modifications you can have it inspected by the game warden and he can issue a change. Say you have a side console or center added, or beefed up the transom and added internal structure, sometimes those things will get you a different hp rating.

Post up some pics and let's see what you're starting with.

The bottom of the boat has voids between the floor runners and I'm not sure what issues that will cause while running. If any, then I will want to fix it. I'm also wanting to go to 50 hp, if possible.

If your talking about the gap between the ribs, those are on all boats. There should not be any issue with that. I can only see one pic on my phone, so I don't know if the other one is the problem you are talking about. (I see the back of the boat)

As for the 50hp, see above. I don't know where you live or what the laws are for your state. You will have to look that info up and see what your state will allow. Almost all states that is a no no. You can not exceed the manufacturers max. HP rating. Yours is rated for 35 and that's what should be on it to stay legal. Now as I said, if your state has a way to have a boat inspected after mods and will allow a larger HP motor to be installed, you will have to find out.

Where do you live?
Have you filled out your profile?

Thank you for the insight on the bottom of the hull of this boat, I'm relieved to know there will be no issue while running.
I will look into what is required for upgrading the weight capacity and the hp rating. 35 hp will be fine but I'm wondering about the weight capacity. 400 lbs including persons, motors, and gear. Typical 35 hp motor - 150 lbs...cranking/trolling battery - 60 lbs...6 gallons fuel - 36 lbs + 5-10 lbs for the fuel can...Trolling motor - 15-20 lbs......tackle?...me?
I understand that I will need to work within the limits of the standard unless a deviation is allowed. I will learn more as this project moves forward.
