Have completed the conversion of a 1964 16 ft Jon boat into a Snake River jet sled used for fishing steelhead and salmon on the Clearwater in Idaho. For power I have a very early 40 hp Mercury outboard jet. It is great for the purpose---though somewhat under powered---but I want something I can take on the ocean. I did consider upgrading this boat by adding an external buoyancy foam collar---the kind the kind that the coastguard has on their boats--but decided that the flat bottom is not well suited for the ocean. Instead I am looking to convert an existing v-hull aluminum boat. Because I am planning on mounting on to of my camper the finished RBB will be no more than 14' with foam collar included. Has anyone done a conversion like this and can he recommend what sort of v-hull boat I should be looking for? Also where can I find the high density foam for the collar at a reasonable price.
