Hello all, first time poster here. I have a problem with my 1986 Evinrude 30 hp. Just rebuilt carb, replaced impeller and lower unit oil. Everything was working fine until I got gas on Sunday, put boat in the water and pumped bulb until hard and started motor. It started fine but died after about 30-45 seconds, I went to pump bulb again and that is when i saw the milky white in my inline filter, gas had water in it . I drained carb, pumped fresh fuel through all fuel lines cleaned and dried gas can, cleared fuel line and bulb by pumping fresh gas through until it came out clean. I got more gas, added oil and started motor. I can not get it to throttle up past idle, as soon as butterfly starts to open up the motor bogs and dies. Do I need to pull carb and give it a good cleaning or am i missing something? I did search this but could not come up with much.

Thanks,
Lee

Yes you're probably going to have to pull your carb.1 thing you might try is getting some gas dry for water in your gas & put some of that in your fuel.

You should check your spark plugs too. You could have some of that milky white on them. If its the carb pay close attention to the slow jet. Its the one with the small holes or orfices in it, it could be partially blocked and thats all it takes

Thanks for the replies. Looks like carb will come off and get a good cleaning. Also, I did pull the plugs and cleaned. They weren't too bad at all.

OK, got carb all cleaned up and put back on. Still have the same problem, if I hold my hand over carb intake it will throttle up but as soon as i move hand away it will die.

Check the filter that is part of the fuel pump.Follow the hose from the connector to the pump, there should be a big screw holding on a black plastic piece. It might say filter on it , there is a fine screen you'll see when you open it.Check that and clean it.It might not be a bad idea to get a pump rebuild kit for it,I think Sierra marine has them,I've gotten them through my local Napa auto parts
