Finally getting stealflex on

After all work sealing seams and rivets using G-flex, then painting all seams and rivets with gluvit, I was finally able to slap on the first coat of white stealflex epoxy. Should have bought more than one gallon. One gallon only got me one coat. I've got a good oil based white I'm going to paint over it in 36 hours just to cover up any light spots. Did a little test patch on the blue too coat to see how it will look. It's been a long process restoring this old thing but were almost there. Once paint is done then I can finally start decking and carpet. Will post again once it's all painted and back on the trailer.

Sorry about that, I've been a member for close to a year but never got around to filling out the profile. I will take care of that right now. I am located in Georgetown, TX.

As far as the boat goes she's an old 1958 lonestar. Haven't figured out the model yet. I've got an old western auto supply Wizard 6hp to go with it. It's already blue so I'm going to sand it up and paint it the same color as my top coat. I'm excited to finally be able to get back under way of this project. Having a full time job and a 2 year old leaves little boat time haha

Man I know the feeling about it being a "long process"! I got my boat stripped and waiting to be painted. Right now, (and yes I mean right now) I am painting my trailer. It is almost done, and feels like it's been a long process. Just waiting for the coat to dry, before I go and put a new one on. Great job on the restore, keep it going. Lets see her all finished up.

I took the easy route out when it came to sanding. I had the boat and trailer sandblasted. Blasted the whole trailer and painted it with rustoleum high gloss oil based. New bunks and all. Trailer is finished. I wanted to finish that so I had a good work platform.

Here's some pictures of the blue paint on. Not drying up as good as I had hoped. I mean it's dry but I can scrape it off with a finger nail. I did put on thick coats. Buy I've never had this happen before. Will let it sit for maybe a week before I set her back on the trailer.

do you use any special paint or primer? Im looking to repaint an old boat and I don't exactly know what to use. Spray paint definitely doesn't hold.

Well where all the white is I used stealflex white then I out 2 coats of rustoleum oil based ulstrawhite. $8.00 a quart at home depot. Then the blue is 3 coats of the same stuff but royal blue. It's really thick stuff. So its taking a while to fully dry. So I'm going to leave it upside down for a about a week and add a fan in the door to keep good ait circulating. I did not use any primer.I sanded down to bare metal then used acetone to clean it and then painted.

I hope it holds in the long run. Etching a surface helps a ton. I would highly encourage you to use a self etching primer next time. I used a primer on my trailer. I cleaned up everything, and went down to bare metal, then cleaned with Acetone, then put a primer on it. I was using Enamel paint for the trailer. I used sprayed cans, and did multiple LIGHT coats at a time. I am learning quick, that painting a boat (or anything else) is a patience game. Give it some time to cure. I am letting my trailer sit for a couple of weeks before I put it back together. Next time I may just pay someone to soda blast the thing.

Nice job so far. I'm doing almost the same project, a 1952 Lone Star 12'. I'm in the scrubbing the old paint off still phase. I plan on using Rustoleum Professional Aluminum Primer spray over the entire boat. The bottom is getting some Aquagard Alumi-Koat, the rest is going to be rustoleum enamel. I am going with the same paint pattern as you are except i'm going to use red where you used blue. For the interior i'm going white as well with antislip added to the pain on the floor surfaces. I found a seller on ebay that sells the lone star decals. I'm putting the Registration numbers in reflective white, using a font similar to the lone star logo. With the Lone star logo on the stern.

I to normally use self watching primer. I went to school for body work. (Wyotech) but decided not to on this one just because of the epoxy steelflex. I've used the rustoleum oil based to bare metal before and had great results so I wanted to try it on the aluminum.

Thacyko- got any pictures? I love these old boats. I'm going to paint the motor close to the same royal blue and the top of the boat. Doing an original outside appearance with an updated inside. Doing a rhino lining type paint on the walls with a deck flooring. White and blue bass boat seats. LED lighting. I like the old/modern thing.

You can get the spray cans at Walmart for about $4.75 a piece. Have you tried using Aircraft Remover to get that paint off? It attacks paint like no tomorrow and will save you some time.

Well I used the same stuff on my trailer. That stuff rocks. It's what I used for the blue. When I did my trailer I bought the gallon. Had enough left over to do two full coats on my neighbors fram to his monte Carlo he's restoring.

As far as paint removal...I had the boat and the trailer sandblasted. Took and hour tondo the boat and an hour for the trailer. $125 and hour. I was very happy with the results. For stripping the paint off the motor tho I found someone had rattle canned it and today while using carb cleaning on the carb the paint strarted coming off like it wasn't even there. So I'm hitting the store tomorrow and buying like 5 cans to blast the whole motor haha

Finally got the boat upright. Here's some pictures of her on the trailer. Time to start on decking and inside paint. And here's also my super cool old school red/green light. Going to take it in Monday and have it soda blasted and re chromed.

Do you plan on adding a wheel jack to the trailer? Be easier to move around and easier on the back :shock:

Started the decking today. Once I have it all fitted and framed, I'm pulling it all out, sealing the wood, painting the inside, carpeting the sealed wood and then installation. Tuesday all my rebuild parts for my Wizard come in to. So I've got alot of work ahead of me but I'm loving every minute of this. Might take it to the water tomorrow just to see how it feels with the decking before I get to far and don't like it.
