Hello, and I hope I can get some help with an idea I have mulling around in my head. I can weld pretty good, and have a 12 foot v-hull I am going to start modding shortly(pics to come shortly). The idea I have to make an extra channel of aluminum on either side the full length of the boat that will essentially 11.5 feet x 10 inches tall x six to eight inches at the base. This will taper up to right up against the boat right below the lip. I will shape and cup it to be as streamlined as possible. This chamber will be filled with closed cell foam and totally sealed. My thought is this hopefully should help with stability, and the reason I am only going 10 inches down is that is where the water line usually sits even with a full boat. Well that is the idea, and I will try and get some concept drawings of this, and pics of the boat up in a few days.

I think the only reason it would help with stability would be by keeping the occupants more in the center of the boat. I think stability has more to do with hull design and weight distribution. I'm definitely not an expert, just my thoughts.

Adding anything inside a boat only adds weight, not floatation unless the boat fills up with water or flips over. An empty hull has more positive floatation because it contains more air space, anything else like foam, sealed boxes, etc is just extra weight.

The channels will be on the outside edge. I have seen those outrigger stabilizer deals, and was just thinking of something more permanent. If it is just a lost cause though I will not do it.

Oh I see, so essentially your widening the boat by 6-8in on each side. I could maybe see it working. They put those welded cubes on the back of Jon boats to keep the back end up, might wanna look at how they do those.

That might be an interesting experiment. But quite honestly, I think you would be better off saving your money and energy for a bigger boat, one that doesn't need that kind of a mod. I currently run a 12 footer and quite happily. But I won't hesitate to go bigger or to a different hull configuration should circumstances dictate. Rick
