If your hitting a lake with various depths (almost all) does it mean you have to constantly keep messing with it ?

No - what I normally do is run teh finder in Auto until I want to target a specific structure or look for bait - then I crank it up with fine adjustments

I'm still waiting for the second part of the guys post.
He hasn't posted it yet.

technically, yes you are supposed to. I usually leave my top depth set to 3-4 feet if I know I'm going to be in 10-15' water. The lake I fish most often is 25-40' deep about 10 feet from the bank because of drought, so I leave the top set to 5' and set the bottom to 45 until I get up to where I want to fish, the dept gets to about 30', then I change my bottom depth to 34' so I can see bottom composition and look for schools of baitfish or regular arches... it's amazing the detail you can see when you change your settings off auto. I've got the Humminbird 727 and the pixels are 640x320 and the detail is awesome. I'll try to take pics tomorrow when I go back out.
