I'm hoping that someone can give me some guidance with this problem I'm having with a 60's Johnson 6hp.

I think that the motor is not getting any gas. If I spray some carb cleaner into the carb, it will fire right up. Unfortunately, it will not keep running more than a few seconds. If I don't spray the carb cleaner, it won't start at all.

I have rebuilt the carb, replacing the float, seals, etc. The fuel pump is new, as are the lines going in and out. The points are new and I had them properly set. The fingers on my right hand are black & blue from my numerous failed attempts at starting the motor.

I've tried starting it while squeezing the bulb, but this makes no difference. I have also tried screaming obscenities at the motor, but this has not worked either.

The gas is a little old, I'm going to get some fresh to make sure it's not the problem, but I'm pretty sure that it's not.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!

Spraying carb cleaner is one of the worse things to do to a 2 cycle.Only use mixed gas.Recheck that your needle & seat is working properly.

It may have incorrect gas/oil mix. Too much oil. As you spray cleaner into it the mixture changes and it will run. As it burns that out, the mixture changes back to heavy oil mix and it quits. My experience with the fuel mixture is that over time the gas evaporates leaving a heavy oil mix behind. You say the gas is a little old? How old is the fuel? It may have water in it also.

Thanks for the info on the carb cleaner . . . that was news to me. Also, I'm going to get some new fuel and re-mix to make sure that there is no chance it's bad.

I do have some concern with the needle & seat. How can I check if it's working properly?

Thanks again!

You need to Rebuild the Carb you can pick them up cheap on Ebay or Boats.net Having to spray fuel into it before it starts is a sure sign it needs rebuild and do not spray carb cleaner in the motor washes the oil off the cylinder walls .

Hope these links help. To see the pictures you would have to login/register just as you would for this site. These links given tons of information for Johnson and Evinrude motors. Help me out a bunch. It would be a benefit to get service manual for your engine for future maintain, repair and up keep. 20 or 30 dollars for a manual on ebay is nothing compare to damage to motor when you do something wrong IMO.
