How to adjust free play in steering wheel?

Cut off the old helm and installed the new one. Pretty easy stuff. Took less than 30 mins. Just turning the wheel in my garage and it has WAY less play. Going test tomorrow.

In case anyone wants to know which helm I installed. It’s the No Feed Back or NFB type.

I remember something being a pain to get off on mine as well. There is a key somewhere holding it in place and it's probably rusted so try the PBblaster or WD40 and some heat.

There was indeed a key and it was indeed rusted. You get a Gold Star!!!!

Did a good 47 mile test run on the Atchafalaya River in basin today. All is good. Have to adjust steering wheel a little bit to be dead straight. It’s a lot better now.

I reused my wheel so I didn't get to break out the sawzall. Good to hear your steering is behaving the way you want it to. I was surprised my new helm did not come with a new key so I was happy I was able to save the old one. It's probably rusted in place now since my boat sits in the water at the dock from Apr to Oct.

My new helm did not have a woodruff key either.
