There was indeed a key and it was indeed rusted. You get a Gold Star!!!!I remember something being a pain to get off on mine as well. There is a key somewhere holding it in place and it's probably rusted so try the PBblaster or WD40 and some heat.
My new helm did not have a woodruff key either.I reused my wheel so I didn't get to break out the sawzall. Good to hear your steering is behaving the way you want it to. I was surprised my new helm did not come with a new key so I was happy I was able to save the old one. It's probably rusted in place now since my boat sits in the water at the dock from Apr to Oct.
