I have a hummingbird 300 fishfinder. All the functions seem to work fine and temp and depth gauge work. However, I never see fish on the screen. Any ideas besides there are no fish where I am at?? Thanks

you could have a partially defective transducer since it not showing fish, but suggest you adjust the settings for sensitivity and such to see if you can get any fish to show. Also I would check the angle of the transducer, it should be level or close to level with the bottom of the hull, loosen the bolt holding the TD a bit and while out on the water move the TD ever so slightly up/down, it only takes a little bit of adjustment.

If you are wanting actual "fish" icons to appear on the screen (when there are fish)....there is a setting for that in the menu. I have however been warned by a HB rep that when this feature is "on" the unit is not working as well. I can't remember exactly what he told me but it was something like when on, it is using power that it could be using in the scan to give you a better read out. Sorry I can't remember exactly what his explanation was.

correct, with the fish icons on it does take a little power from your transducer wich makes your screen show false readings(showing fish sometimes that are not fish or just nothing, but with icons on turn your sensitivity down and it helps when using them). i never use the feature for that reason, and also trust the return on the screen when i see the arches(fish returns) because you can tell by the darkness at the beginning(left side of arc) of the reading where the return is coming from in reguards to cone angle. some cone angles are wider than others and the deeper the water the the bigger your cone coverage gets, meaning you see more behind, front and to the sides of your boat because the cone spreads out your coverage with more distance. and last the less sensitivity will let you see bigger objects easier but you loose detail meaning you wont see little things like smaller fis, baitfish etc...too much and your screen goes dark and you cant tell whats down there. it takes a long time staring at your screen to be able to know exactly what you are seeing. i have a 1197 HB with SI and DI wich is like looking at a picture from a camera and the detail is insane, that being said i still use the 2D sonar a lot because it shows fish better, SI and DI shows fish like they are white blurs and if the fish has something between them and the ducer you wont see them. SI and DI works great for structure finding, and fish when they are smiling....
