Hey all. I'm new here. I just started working on an old 10' jon that I've had sitting in the backyard for a while. It was given to me by my grandfather.

There was some sort of putty applied to the outsides of the rivets (almost like a wad of gum smashed against them). I was concerned about them leaking. Some were about to fall off and all of them were ugly. I chipped them off and then polished the area with a steel brush drill attachment.

I also removed the old rotting transom and got some new hardware for the handles that mount to it.

I've been doing a lot of searching and reading through many threads about the best way to tighten rivets. This is what my rivets look like:

I just filled the boat with water and many of the rivets were leaking (some more than others) so I need to fix them.

Basically, I am afraid of drilling out and replacing rivets. I'd like to tighten them with a hammer and a backing on the other side (I would tap the rivet on the bottom side of the boat, correct?) and then put a sealant on or around them but I don't know if that will be a good fix. I ask about this method because my rivets look different than others I have read about and I wasn't sure if "bucking" would be an option.

Should I just replace the rivets or can I tighten them with a hammer and then seal them?

If I need to replace the rivets, what is the best way to do it? What am I going to need?

I would hammer them and then test for leaks, that might be all you need.

Sealing would be your choice(peace of mind).

Thanks for the welcome! And the speedy response, wow!

So for this type of rivet, I would put something heavy/hard on the rivet on the inside and then tap the rivet with a small hammer on the outside (bottom), correct?

Ball peen hammer will be your best friend for this job! :D

Tap them all out, put the boat on saw horses and then fill it with water. Look under the boat and you should see where they are still leaking.

Good luck man!
