Seriously, they did that? You know one of the key ingredients is saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and it is a diuretic. It will make you pee like racehorse.
Not to mention that the charcoal and sulphur doesn’t taste that great.

I guess it’s all relative to what you are eating. Gunpowder might go a long way to improve the taste of unrefrigerated decaying meat (road kill) that you shot a few days ago.

Well written history says they did anyway. John James Audubon talks of that in one of his journals and a Dr. in Napoleon's Army writes of using it to season a stew he made.

Got a couple more 17-18" smallmouth yesterday and missed a couple more. Something is very strange this year for these fish to be this active so early. The 2nd fish had all kinds of food coming out of its mouth when I netted it. All the fish I caught/saw yesterday were in 3' or less of water since the river is pretty low already.

Got a couple more 17-18" smallmouth yesterday and missed a couple more. Something is very strange this year for these fish to be this active so early. The 2nd fish had all kinds of food coming out of its mouth when I netted it. All the fish I caught/saw yesterday were in 3' or less of water since the river is pretty low already.

June was warmer but April/May still had some high water that seemed to be cooler like normal. I remember years ago swimming on May 7th with the river being low and warm but there was no fish action like this. There have also been quite a few years with a high river and so cold you couldn't swim on the 4th of July. Last year, April was low and clear but there was no fish action. Then May we got hit with a lot of rain and it was high/muddy for a month with cooler temps and no fish action. Something gives me the feeling the fish are predicting something bad like a major flood and are eating now while they can. I hope I'm wrong.

If it’s been raining a lot they could be feeding heavily on terrestrials like worms and bugs that are washing into the river.
