Intro + First Time Help

Hey guys my name is Earp or as you can guess im Wyatt. Im 14 (Forgive me for my lack of experience) but share the same love many of you have for some beautiful tin Boats. Recently my parents friends game me a 1990's era 14ft shallow V (not sure brand or year), a trailer, and a motor for ABSOLUTELY FREE. So im ready to get this thing prepared for a complete redo. im looking to add a front and back deck, remove the middle seat, and place a 100 quart cooler for a livewell inside the floor of the front deck, As well as many more things. I have quite a few starter questions many being electrical since that is my main weakness. But just letting everyone know that sooner or later you will see some tin resto from me!

You see, Thats the problem. Its up at my cabin and we dont plan on being there for a week or 2..but all i can say living in northern Minnesota its gonna be used for the small lakes around my cabin and the lake my cabin is on. I also plan on using it for a fishing boat since thats all i think about on a regular basis. Im also thinking about getting a new motor because this one needs so many repairs and im just not up to that. So with that being said, Whats the best brand for a 20-25 HP motor? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? thanks for the help.

Sorry for the double post, But i dont remember seeing any decals for the company on the boat. All i know is it was factory painted light green.

We dont in Minnesota but i have one since im under 16. and thanks ill work on it But im pretty sure its a crestliner

Best 20-25 HP engine? 2- or 4-stroke?

Depends a lot on your budget, and some on your intended use. Looking at your age, I'm guessing you will be looking for a used engine, maybe even one about your own age? If the latter is the case, then a 2-stroke is your best bet, and finding one in good shape is a lot more important then what the stickers on it says...

On the subject of new (or newish) the subject gets a bit more complicated.
If you do a lot of trolling with the engine, (like me) then a 4-stroke is defenitely the way to go. If you use the engine mainly for high speed transportation, then the difference is of less importance. 2-stroke engines are arguably a dying breed, but with lighter weight and less moving parts then the 4-strokes, they do have their share of fans out there.

I realize this could get me into trouble on a US-forum, but for me there are no other brands then Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki, and only kids on mopeds use 2-strokes.

How can i get a title? it was lost in a fire.

In Kansas a bill of sale will work, don't know about your state. Kansas registers boats with Wild Life and Parks department if your state is same check with them. You can also ask those that gave you the boat to file for lost title. Good luck.

I love to troll and so does my dad. When we go on fishing trips for a week we usually go through about 40 gallons from trolling islands so im thinking 4-stroke is the best way to go thanks

Is the motor that you currently have a 25hp?
That size might be at the max. or over the max hp for the style boat you are using.
An older 9.9hp/15hp evinrudes are great second motors and on a 14' boat they get the job done nicely.

Also you say it's needs to be repaired?
Sometimes a few repairs on an older outboard that you know,is better than than buying a second hand motor that you know nothing about.

The current motor is a 90's Johnson 9.9 but I still know nothing about it. I might try to locate the main problem and ask people on here otherwise buy a used one off craigslist. And with the modifications im making to the boat im not sure if a 9.9 will be enough. Also, from pictures ive been seeing on the forums my boat might be an 80's or 90's crestliner but im still not sure on the length yet. Somewhere between 14 and 16. thanks for the help

Welcome and good luck on your build. I had a 12 gheenoe with a seahorse on it at your age. I fish the flats at Keaton beach fla. had a blast.

Here and I stress here only the last registered owner can get a duplicate from the state. Then they transfer that title to you or your parents. If the last registered owner is deceased than whoever was in charge of the estate can do the paper work.
