Johnson 40 HP

Can I put a lower unit from a 74 Evinrude on a Johnson 40 hp I beleive the Johnson is an 1984 model . They both have exhaust through the prop . Any information woud be great . Thanks .

I guess my question does anybody know if the bolt pattern is the same and is the drive shaft have the same spline ?

Go and look up the part numbers and diagrams and see if they are the same.

Do some legwork..

Bolt pattern and spline should be the same.

just got done doing the same search, you need a 1979-1988 35-60HP to match up. Johnson or evinrude will work.

I 've worked on a lot of Johnson & Evinrudes , Most of the outboards 9.9 to 25hp has the same frame . The bigger frame like 40p to 50 hp I wasn't 100% sure Thanks to all ! Great information .
