Can any of the OMC gurus answer a question for me?

I'm looking at a 1996 Evinrude 50 hp that could possibly need some work. Is there a way I can figure out what all powerheads are compatible with this engine? I'd like to find a good running engine and just swap the powerhead onto my engine but I'm sure they changed throughout the years.

Any pointers would be very helpful.

Powerheads from 94-05 will drop on that motor but the 94 model has the red plug electronics vs the newer black plugs that came along in 95 but the 96 electronics can be put on the 94 powerhead. The 89-93 model powerheads will bolt up but the cranks have different splines for the drive shaft then the 94 and ups do. The 88 and older will bolt up but have the same crank as the 89-93 but have a different head and different brackets for the belly pans to mount to.

Rude, did they make a 94-05 60 HP 2 cyl? How did you get a 60 HP short shaft? :)

No the 60hp 2 cylinders where older motors rated at the powerheads.
I took a long shaft 60hp 3 cylinder and cut it down and welded the mid section along with a list of other things that had to be cut down and modded to make it all fit and work properly work. Most of the time people that run a prop motor will find a short shaft stinger/hustler and if they want power tilt and trim they'll mod a Yamaha pro 50 tilt and trim bracket to fit the stinger mid section and swivel.
