First Alum 2 copy.jpgI picked up this boat last week and in the middle of stripping it. Does anybody know what it is? I estimate it to be made in the 60's. I have seen may post where people cut out the middle seat for room, does this make it more unstable? When I leak checked this boat it was pretty wobbly. Would love to cut out the middle seats and place a flat flooring over the entire boat but I am hesitant as I do not want to reduce the little stability it has. Any comments or suggestions on that?

Also,

Going to bond some parts, do I bondo after primer or before? I read both ways on this forum.

I am stripping this boat with Aircraft stripper. I plan on giving it a light sanding, clean with vinegar and putting down some decent aluminum primer. I have read so many different ways to do it, does my simple plan sound reasonable?

Gents, I am really excited about this project and VERY open to any advice or pointers.

Jake

If you take out the center bench seat without adding some kind of support the hull will twist on you. If you add some floor supports with a solid floor it will help, but not enough to keep it from feeling unstable. If you install some addition aluminum stringers with a aluminum floor it will tie the hull together and feel a lot more stable, but the sides will probably still move on you.

No clue what hull you have, but I agree probably mid 60's. Strip it down to bare aluminum, sand it good, use a good self etching primer, but I wouldn't use bondo below the water line. Bondo wont expand and contract with the aluminum when it heats up and cools down, and eventually will crack. Use something like all metal aluminum filler or something along those lines, you'll be happier with it. Good luck.

It looks like an Alumacraft it's similar to mine but check out my post

What i did with my center bench is cut out the middle section to make it a walk-thru.. I cut 2" wider than the depth of the bench so i could fold that material around the now open section. I also didn't cut down to the floor, leaving a little along the bottom for strength. My center bench is now 2 storage hatches.
