i just bought a hds7 gen 2 to upgrade in size of screen.. i would like to know if i have to install 2nd transducer if i want to use the 5 for gps function only. thanks for any comments

The HDS 5 has a standalone internal GPS , the 7 does also. You could connect them both to the LSS module if you have one and view DI and SI from either unit. This is how my 2 8" units are and also have NMEA network installed for the sonic hub. Use one on TM and the other from your transom (83/200)
But if you just want to use charts on the 5 it should still work as long as it's powered up but might as well utilize all the cool stuff it does too.

No you do not need transducer hooked up to use it just as GPS unit. I take my HDS7's off my boat in late fall and install them on a quad and in my pickup for gps mapping when icefishing. Be good if hook them both up to ether net though. that way they work in conjunction with each other for waypointing objects you see in structure scan.
What I like is that I can go over lake in summer and save structure scan data on chip and overlay it on map. so once winter comes can see what looks like under me without having transducer.

you should be able to "turn off " the FF function in one of the settings menus.

just go through the charts and you will be able to choose full screen gps mode. Im not sure if you can hook a gen 1 and gen 2 structure scan together

I think the gen 1 will work with the lss2. But I dont think the gen 2 supports the lss1. I may be wrong. The gps should work without the transducer.
